Reading Time: 2 mins
Do you think you have a nose for a bargain? Do you know your antique collectibles from the old trash no one wants? Well, if this sounds like you then we have the perfect opportunity lined up. Here at MoneyMagpie we love finding ways to make money and we think we’re pretty good at spotting something that’s worth more than it’s price, so we might even apply ourselves…
The Job
A national antique silverware and jewellery outlet is on the hunt for a ‘Professional Magpie’ to find valuable silver antiques and jewellery at car boot sales and flea markets across the country. If you’re a regular MoneyMagpie reader then you are certainly a professional Magpie, this is the job for you!
Your employer will be AC Silver. AC Silver is an antique silverware and jewellery outlet, specialising in buying and selling genuine antique silver items including jewellery, centrepieces, candelabras and candlesticks, timepieces and Art Nouveau silverware – to name a few.
For the last few years AC Silver has noticed an increase in people bringing cheap items into the store that they have picked up at general events like flea markets and car boot sales, which are in fact very valuable. This trend inspired AC Silver to recruit for such a position.
Andrew Campbell, founder of AC Silver said,
“As time progresses, increasing amounts of items become antiques, items people have in their homes continue to appreciate in value – even if they are unaware. This is why we are seeing these valuable products appear at events such as car boot sales, which are deemed more suitable for the general public. People often don’t know what they’re selling!
“This is why we are looking to recruit as soon as possible – the busiest periods for car boot sales are when it’s sunny, as vendors do not like standing in the rain trying to sell their old items! We’re hoping that we can get someone recruited by the end of June, with a view to start selling the products they acquire by the end of July.”
Skills
The job advert states that the successful applicant must have a passion for antiques, silverware and jewellery, as well as have a deep understanding of what makes an item valuable, and be able to ‘haggle’ vendors down to the lowest possible price. The brand says it’s ‘looking for the next David Dickinson’, and would like the candidate to start as soon as possible, just in time for the summer period – when car boot sales are at their busiest.
Salary and Perks
AC Silvery will pay the ‘Professional Magpie’ £30 an hour and will cover all travel expenses. You will have £2,000 per event to play with. Additionally, once the items have been valued by experts, you’ll will also be given a 20% commission of the sale profits, on top of the £30 hourly rate. Not bad!
