The MoneyMagpie Marketplace: Make Money and Buy Local!

Reading Time: 6 mins

We’re so excited to launch the MoneyMagpie Marketplace! It’s your new online marketplace to buy and sell locally. So, whether you just want to get rid of your unwanted clutter or if you want to run an online shop to sell your services or products, you can do it at the MoneyMagpie Marketplace!

We want to help our Magpies save money by buying local and affordable services, like cleaning and dog walking, from people in their neighbourhood. Whether you want to be an online tutor or offer mobile car washing to your neighbours, it can all be done in one easy, free listing.

We also – always – want to make sure our community is making as much extra cash as they can!

So, we created the MoneyMagpie Marketplace. Here’s everything you need to know.

Why Use the MoneyMagpie Marketplace?

Why use the MoneyMagpie Marketplace?

Online marketplaces are popular because they offer great value and an easy shopping experience. We go one step further, though: you’re supporting other Magpies when you buy from them. Products are available from all over the country – and the services are all local to your area, so you’re going to connect with like-minded Magpies in your community!

Plus, our fees are really low for sellers. Instead of paying to list (like you would on eBay, Gumtree, or Etsy), it’s free to post your listing. You’ll only pay a small commission (8%) when you make a sale and 1.4% plus £0.20 for the Stripe transaction fee. In fact, right now (while we’re in beta testing mode), it’s FREE. Entirely, 100% free. There is NO commission for the first 50 sellers that create listings on the Marketplace for three months!

The Marketplace is ideal for both buyers and sellers because:

  • It’s a secure platform
  • You’re connecting with other savvy Magpies
  • You support local businesses
  • It’s easy to find an item or service in your area
  • There are no upfront seller fees
  • Local means no hefty delivery fees!

What Can I Buy or Sell on the Marketplace?

As long as your product or service is legal to sell or buy in the UK, you can list it. The full terms and conditions are here – but you’ll see it’s all just common sense! Listings WILL be moderated and any inappropriate adverts will be immediately removed.

The site is split into two sections: products and services.

Services on the Marketplace

If you run a business that helps people in your local area, post about it on the relevant channel in the services section. You can choose from:

  • Business Services – like IT, design, writing, commercial cleaning, corporate catering
  • Health, Beauty, and Fitness – beauticians, massage therapists, manicurists, personal trainers, and yoga teachers are just a few examples for this section
  • Help Around the Home – cleaners, childminders, babysitters, dog walkers, carers and companions can all be found here
  • Classes and Online Learning – local gym classes, one-to-one tutors, online language classes, music lessons, anything you can learn is here!

Products on the MoneyMagpie Marketplace

This can be anything from special cakes to crafts to a second-hand toaster. Anything you want – or want to sell – can be listed. Whether you want to sell one single item or run a business through the platform, it’s up to you!

If you want to earn extra cash on the side, listing your homemade crafts, bakes, artwork, woodwork, or anything else is a great way to make money in your spare time. A listing stays live until you remove it. So, if you want to sell 50 of the same thing, you don’t need to make 50 new listings! However, if you’re selling just one item, remember to delete the listing once it’s sold.

Information for Sellers

You’re responsible for the accuracy of your listing – so make sure it’s perfect before you post it! If you’re adding a one-off item, make a note to remove the listing once it’s sold.

Our fees are really low compared to similar online platforms, because we want our Magpies to have as much cash in their pockets as possible. We won’t take fees from any sellers in the first three months – and it’s always free to list. Commission is a low 8% (plus 1.4% and 20p Stripe transaction fee) – compare this to spaces like Etsy which charge a minimum 5% AND a 4% payment fee PLUS 20p extra. You’d also have to pay for the listing up front on many websites – so you’re paying before you get any sales!

You don’t have to pay anything to list your item or service on the MoneyMagpie Marketplace. You only pay a commission when you sell something.

Delivery Fees

Make sure you add delivery fees in the price of your item. How much you charge for delivery is up to you – remember to account for the platform fee, packaging, and postage or courier charges.

If you’re happy to send your item overseas, we recommend creating a separate ‘International Delivery’ listing. Make sure you include details in this listing about customs, duties, and taxes and estimated delivery times.

Payment Details

Frequent Payment Questions

The MoneyMagpie Marketplace uses Stripe to process your transactions. At the moment, we can’t accept Paypal. Stripe is a secure card processing platform that accepts both credit and debit cards. The first 50 sellers won’t pay the MoneyMagpie commission for the first three months, but will still pay the 1.4% +20p Stripe transaction fee (that’s not something we can change, unfortunately!).

When you register as a seller, you’ll be asked for your payment information. Put in the details of the bank account you’d like to receive your money into. We won’t take any money until you sell something – and even then, it’s a low commission fee of 8% of the sale price.

As a buyer, you don’t have to give your payment details until you’re ready to buy something. Input your card information to complete the transaction and away you go! MoneyMagpie doesn’t handle any of your payment information – it goes straight to Stripe – which is a secure payment platform.

The Beta Tester Offer

We’ve JUST launched the MoneyMagpie Marketplace. So, to make sure our Magpies are happy with the platform, we’re running a special offer.

BUYERS get £5 off their first purchase. Simply email a copy of your receipt to editorial@moneymagpie.com to start the refund process. (Applies to the first 50 buyers, so get in quick!)

SELLERS won’t pay ANY commission for the first three months (until 1st January 2021). This means it’s FREE to list your items or service and FREE to complete the transaction. (Eligible for the first 50 sellers to sign up, Stripe 1.4% +20p transaction fee still applies, sorry).

We know that there are going to be things to improve on the Marketplace. It needs people like YOU to get involved and make the most of the free listings and buyer refunds to let us know where we need to tweak it. What works? What needs improvement? What’s missing? Tell us what you think – email editorial@moneymagpie.com or jump on the Marketplace Testing Messageboard to leave a comment.

How to Sign Up

It’s really easy to get started with the Marketplace – both as a buyer and seller. First, hop over to the MoneyMagpie Marketplace page. Simply click the ‘Join’ button at the top right-hand corner of the page and enter a few details about yourself. You’re ready to buy and sell!

If you’re wanting to buy or sell a physical item, head over to the All Products area to have a look around. For those wanting to sell several items, we recommend creating a shop (found on the top right of the menu on each page). This helps you keep your listings in order and repeat listings with ease for similar products.

Looking for a service like dog walking in your area? Click on All Services and use the filter on the search to narrow down the results. If you want to sell your service to people in your area, select Sell a Service and fill out the listing details.
