Netflix Looking For People To “Win Big” in Squid Game UK

Reading Time: 2 mins

Now here is a story we never thought we would be writing. Netflix have put out a casting call to entice people to play a UK reality show version of their famous Korean series Squid Game.

Following on from the announcement that season two is on its way, the announcement says they want people “to take part in the UK’s largest social experiment” – and for people who have seen the original show, this obviously causes some alarm. In the series, we see a very deprived society, in such alarming contrast to the wealthy, that they are scrambling around for money and willing to be degraded and lose their humanity to escape their crushing debt and existence. Therefore it seems an unusually tasteless opportunity in the midst of our own economic crisis; especially when people like Chrissy Teigan were so widely criticised for hosting a “Squid Game party” after seeing the original show.

Regardless, the producers are offering a chance to ‘win big’: “You’ve seen the drama, now it’s your chance to take part in Netflix’s biggest ever social experiment! This supersized unscripted show turns the scripted world of the drama into reality. Real-life players will be immersed in the iconic Squid Game universe and will never know what’s coming next. Here they’ll compete in a series of heart-stopping games in order to become the sole survivor* and walk away with a life-changing cash prize.

With a fortune up for grabs, who will be an ally, who will you trust, and who will you betray in this ultimate test of character?

*Please note: Win or lose, all players will leave unscathed. But if you win, you win big!”

So, while we don’t know the exact amount up for grabs, we do know that it won’t be such a horrifically amoral free-for-all as the original!

If you fancy your shot, in a non-death wish arena, you can apply here.

If you are looking for less extreme ways to make money then check our many many ideas here.

61% of young people encouraged to start side hustles

Reading Time: 3 mins

As the cost-of-living crisis rages on, many young people of Gen-Z age (those born between 1997 and 2012) have taken up side hustles to supplement their income. This, mixed with millions developing new hobbies during lockdowns as the result of the pandemic, has spurred more creativity than ever.

With new trends emerging weekly and the internet at our fingertips, making money on the side has never been easier. But what are the most profitable side hustles in 2022?

From baking delicious goodies to selling slime and more, here are some of the best side hustles.

The best products to sell in 2022

Believe it or not, slime and foam make the most profit when sold online. Loved by children and adults alike, this sensory product is not only great for having fun with, but it is also good for relieving anxiety, calming tetchy hands and well, it is super satisfying to play with.

With just over 8,000 accounts selling slime related products on online marketplace Etsy – a low number of sellers compared to other products – and the average cost of the products being £8.50, slime is the winner. Plus, there is high demand, with 325,000 searches for this item on Amazon.

In second place, personalised drink and barware. The personalised pint glass for Dad for Christmas, the mug with your name on it, for example. The competition is fierce, though. There are over 2.2 million sellers on Etsy who sell this type of product. The Amazon searches for this type of item is much less than slime, too, at just 79,000 searches.

Food gift hampers take the third spot and candles and holders come in at number four. Jewellery comes in at fifth position, with over 12 million Etsy sellers and 398,000 Amazon searches.

You can see the top ten products to sell in the table below.

side hustles

The most profitable side hustles

Besides selling products, there are many ways to make decent money to supplement your income. If you are tech savvy, you are in luck! Website design is the most lucrative by far, with an average selling price of £179. This is closely followed by project management, which has an average selling price of £33.

You can see the most lucrative side hustles for 2022 in the graphic below. It is very tech heavy, with SEO, mobile apps creation, website building and WordPress website design all within the top 10.

The most in demand side hustles

Some side hustles can earn you more cash than others, there is no doubt about that. But what is the consumer demand for these goods and services?

When will you receive the £400 energy grant?

Reading Time: 2 mins

When will the £400 energy grant be paid?

In May, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced a new range of support measures to help the country with the current cost of living crisis. It is no news to the UK that inflation is at a 40-year high, reaching a staggering 9.1%.

On top of this, energy prices more than doubling in April of this year left many of us feeling the strain more than ever. Households nationwide are facing troubling times, with more doom and gloom set to come in Autumn as the energy price cap is set to double once more.

As hundreds, or in some cases, thousands of pounds are added to annual bills, the chancellor confirmed a £650 payment to support those on Universal Credit and other specific means-tested benefits.

On top of this, The Chancellor announced that the previously announced £200 energy rebate, which households were required to pay back over 5 years from 2023, will be doubled to £400. Additionally, the grant will no longer have to be repaid, allowing many households to breathe a momentary sigh of relief.

This £400 energy grant will be paid to pretty much every household within the UK. But when will it be paid to us? And how will we receive it?

Who will get the grant?

As previously mentioned, nearly everyone within the UK is eligible for the £400 energy grant. If you rent a property and your energy bills is included in your rent cost, however, the rebate will be paid to your landlord instead of directly to you. This is because your landlord will be the person responsible for paying the bill.

Your landlord should then pass this rebate onto you. However, there are no rules currently in place in which landlords are obligated to reimburse their tenants. If your energy bills are including in your rent costs, reach out to your landlord to discuss this with them immediately and try to come to an agreement.

Similarly, some people who live in a caravan may not receive this payment. If you do live in a caravan and pay an energy fee to the owner of the caravan park, you will not receive this payment. If you pay directly to an energy company yourself, however, you will receive this grant.

Those living on houseboats may be another exception. For many, electricity use may be including in your docking fee, and therefore you will not receive the energy rebate.

How will the money be paid?

Energy suppliers will send the money to households who have a domestic electricity meter over the course of six months. This will begin in October 2022.

If you pay by direct debit, the money will be credited to your account. This is the same for those who pay by credit card. If you have a pre-payment meter, the money may be applied to your meter. It may also be paid via a voucher, depending on your supplier.

Iceland loans: Up to £75 to help pay for food

Reading Time: 2 mins

Supermarket and frozen food favourite Iceland are offering small loans to customers to help pay for their food shopping. The rate of inflation is at the highest it has been in 40 years, and the cost of living is causing a huge strain on the pockets of households nationwide.

In a move to help customers pay for essential food shopping, these loans are between £25 and £75. This is operated by charity owned lender Fair For You. These loans can be accessed through the Iceland Food Club.

Customers can request up to £75 in these loans. However, they must be paid back at a minimum rate of £10 weekly. There is also a maximum credit allowance of £100 at any given time. When customers have been approved for this loan, it will be put onto a Food Club card.

The Food Club card allows you to pay for your food shop online, in store and at Iceland’s sister company The Food Warehouse.

As is the case with most loans, interest rates apply to the loan. The managing director of Iceland, Richard Walker, has explained that a £75 loan repaid over a total of eight weeks, a minimum repayment of £10 per week, will incur interest of approximately £2.89. Similarly, £25 borrowed would see you paying 40 pence in interest.

According to Fair For You, the interest rate payable is 45 per cent, equivalent to 55.6 per cent APR.

other help

Although this is a good, short term solution in times when people may have to choose between heating or eating, there are other ways to help pay for the ever-rising costs of food. Caution must be taken with loans, as it could lead to struggling to pay for other daily essentials. In worse cases, it could lead to debt.

Contact your local council if you are struggling to feed yourself, your family or other loved ones. They may have grants and support packages available to help those who are vulnerable or on very low incomes. Some councils are also giving food vouchers to people to help them stock their cupboards.

Make sure you are aware of any foodbanks in your local area. Similarly, apps such as Olio and Too Good To Go can provide good food for very low prices. Sometimes, even for free.

Simon Dukes, CEO of Fair for You, said:

“Whilst some people are dependent on grants for food, many families are struggling to put food on the table in school holidays and either don’t wish to go to food banks or are ineligible.

“An independent social impact report shows that Food Club provides a lifeline for these families. Food Club can only be used a few times per year and therefore can not be used as an ongoing, long-term way to buy food. Affordability checks are run to ensure micro credit is offered only to people who can demonstrate a means of repaying. Fair for You, as a charity-owned lender, provides support and flexibility to help customers make repayments.”

People are being forced to cut back on food shopping

Reading Time: 2 mins

As the cost of living crisis rages on, more people than ever are having to cut down when they go food shopping to save money.

A survey by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has found that nearly half of adults have bought less food in the last fortnight due to increasing prices. The same survey also found food was the most common reason for increased overall outgoings every month.

Supermarket giants Tesco and Asda have also said they have noticed a reduction in the amount their customers are shopping. Asda has also told of customers who are watching the till total closely. Many are asking checkout staff to stop scanning their items when the total reaches a certain amount.

Switching to budget and own brand supermarket ranges is also a method being used by consumers to curb the costs of their supermarket shop. Other behavioural changes seen within larger supermarkets across the UK is customers buying less food yet visiting more frequently. This may be in an attempt to only buy what is needed and not spend more by assuming what may be wanted or needed in coming days.

The ONS also said supermarkets said their customers are spending less on their food shop due to rising costs of living. In May of this year, overall retail sales fell by 0.5%. In the same month, supermarket specific sales dropped by 1.5%. Specialist shops such as greengrocers and butchers say a whopping 2.2% fall in sales in May also.

UK inflation is currently at its highest level since 1982, at a staggering 9.1%. This has caused prices to rise at their fastest rate for 40 years, with the general cost of living soaring. This has caused a huge strain on finances up and down the country.

This survey has shown cutting back on food shopping is the greatest evidence of the effect of the rising cost of living on the finances of households everywhere. Food is a necessity for everyone and with 56% of respondents saying they had bought fewer groceries in the last fortnight, and the same proportion of people claiming to have skipped meals to save money, shows the real strain people are facing.

Will The Proposed Interest free loans Work?

Reading Time: 2 mins

News that a Government supported scheme will be handing out interest free loans to people on low incomes has been met with some skepticism. We take a further look into why.

The roll-out is expected in September and hopes to assist 20,000 people.

What exactly are these loans?

After a successful trial in Manchester, the no-interest loan scheme (NILS), backed by the Treasury and run by credit unions and other lending organisations, is set to have a mass roll-out for the rest of the UK in September this year.

It hopes to combat the use of payday loans for vulnerable people and also aims to offer emergency funds to those who may otherwise be turned down due to their inability to make interest payments.

Customers are allowed to have only one loan with the programme, which they can have for between six and 18 months, although the average length of time is 12 months. Borrowers can access between £100 and £2,000, with the average amount borrowed £500.

MoneyMagpie’s founder Jasmine Birtles says that although “it sounds like a good idea, I can see it backfiring. Apart from anything else I don’t know that the scheme will last as many people won’t pay back so it won’t be self-sustaining.”

Where is the Money Coming From?

Andrew Sykes from Noah’s Ark Services in Yorkshire says, “It’s interesting. Fair4all Finance are behind it and get funding from the dormant bank accounts pot (£90,000,000 I think).

I’m surprised by the upper end, £2,000, I think it would work better (like the Iceland scheme) if it was smaller amounts (a few hundred) aimed at those who might end up with a loan shark.”

Sykes also reminds readers that “I’d definitely like to add a caveat on EVERY loan, you must get debt advice. Let someone who knows what they’re doing have a proper look at what’s actually going on.”

Jasmine Birtles adds: “I think this will be helpful for a lot of people, particularly single parents who often struggle to keep up with bills from week to week. I suspect there will be some who will see this as an opportunity to get free money and will have no intention of paying the money back. There will be others who do mean to pay it back but circumstances may prevent them, However, for a number of people who just need a bit of cash to tide them over until next Friday or until payday, this will be a marvellous help and will prevent them from dropping into the hands of nasty loan sharks.”

More news on how to access these loans will come in the following months.

Make money from dirty laundry

Reading Time: 8 mins

There are a surprising number of ways you can make money from dirty laundry. You may have seen our previous articles on making money selling your knickers or used tights. But there are many other weird, wonderful and quite frankly interesting ways you can make money from your dirty laundry.

They aren’t all seedy ways, either. Some of them are quite practical and could become a nice little earner. Every little helps, as they say. Especially at the moment with the cost of living through the roof!

Utilise your washing machine

a washing machine

If you spend a lot of time at home, getting paid to wash clothes could be a nice little side earner. Perhaps you just love doing laundry (to each their own!) and want to pocket some extra pennies from doing it.

You could start your own business from home, using your own washing machine. You can offer laundry services for the price you choose, and can do anything from washing to drying, ironing and even folding. Bonus points (and cash!) if you can do clothing repairs too.

The good thing about setting up the business yourself is that you have full control over the rates you charge. Set your rates fairly, though. Check out how much laundrettes in your area charge per wash, or how much other laundry services cost to use. Remember to charge enough to cover the costs of the energy being used by your washing machine and make a little extra, but not so much it puts people off. If you have a tumble dryer or steamer, you could even charge slightly more.

If you have a car, you have the flexibility to pick up and return items of laundry you have cleaned for your clients. You can also charge a little extra for transporting laundry straight to your customer’s door.

Advertising

Create a Facebook page or a website using a fast website builder like SquareSpace to help spread the word about your business. You could even put posters up in your local area, in shop windows or community notice boards. Offer discounted rates for friends and family to begin with and let them trial your services. Then, ask them to spread the word.

There are apps available on which you can offer your services, too. WaShare is a community app which allows you to advertise your laundry services in your local area. Clients can book in a time and date with you through this, look at the services you offer and how much you charge for these. The cost is almost half that of traditional laundrettes, so you can make money whilst your clients save.

The great thing about this line of work, is that you will likely get regular clients who grow to know and trust you. You will also have random clientele here and there, who may have a specialist item they want you to wash, or who’s washing machines have packed in and they urgently need their piles of laundry done.

Things to remember

There are things to consider when starting your own at home laundry business, though.

The first tip is to always make sure you check all items before washing them to ensure there is no damage already there. You don’t want to find yourself being blamed for a missing button or a rip in a seam if they were already there when you received the item.

Similarly, make sure you are always prepared to be honest with your customers. If you do accidentally cause a tear, stain or cause damage to an item, be open and honest with your customer about this. Be prepared to cover any costs, if this does happen, and perhaps even offer a discounted or free wash next time to appease your client.

It is important to make sure your buy the right equipment for the services you are offering. Having equipment which works well will make your work far quicker and more efficient.

If you offer to take on items made from a particular material, make sure you are knowledgeable about how to wash and care for these garments as to not damage them. Different materials need to be washed or dried on different settings. Some materials can be ironed, whereas others cannot. Always do your homework!

If this sounds like a good plan, but you aren’t prepared to do laundry in your own home, why not look for a steady income stream by working at your local laundrette. Many laundrettes need workers, and you could do it a day or two a week to supplement your income. It is a way to meet new people, socialise, and make money from dirty laundry!

Sell your underwear

make money from dirty laundry

Yes, really. It may not be to everyone’s taste, but it can be a very big earner for many people. As mentioned at the beginning of this article, here at MoneyMagpie we have recently written articles about how to sell your knickers and your used tights to make money.

Don’t get us wrong – we understand not everyone may be totally comfortable doing this. This is okay, just keep scrolling! But for those who are interested, read on.

Last year, The Metro released an article by a woman who claims to make up to £4,000 a month selling her used underwear online. Yes – £4,000 Great British Pounds a MONTH.

It’s not just knickers and socks, either. You can make money from all dirty laundry. Bras, skirts, dresses and even sweaty tops sell online. It’s easy money, really. Websites like Sofia Gray are specifically made for this purpose. It is a good place to start if you are unsure of how to go about it.

Reminder

As with anything like this, you may get inappropriate requests or messages. That’s why it is important to go with a site set up specifically for this purpose. Not only does it allow you a safety blanket, allowing you to delete or block anyone who makes you feel uncomfortable, but you set the rules. You can decide what items you choose to sell, and for how much.

It may not be the most conventional way to make money, but it sure is lucrative. It’s a great source of passive income and a brilliant side hustle for many. You can read our full article about selling your knickers here and our articles about selling your tights here.

Sell your shoes

shoes

As with socks, there is a big market for all things feet. Shoes, particularly well-worn ones, can be very popular online. The Savvy Sloth even wrote about someone who made almost £400 in just three months by selling their – in their own words – ‘smelly’ shoes.

As with selling your underwear online, it is important to use a trusted website. You could also use online marketplaces such as eBay, but it is imperative you word any listings you make wisely. Avoid using words like ‘smelly’, ‘stinky’, etcetera. Your listings may be taken down by the website and you could face a ban on your account. Phrases such as ‘worn’, ‘well-worn’ and ‘well-used’ are preferable.

Again, using a website allows you to block or delete people who make you feel uncomfortable or make requests too bizarre for your taste. Keep in mind, though, that many selling platforms, whether they are designed for this purpose or not, may take a small selling fee. Some websites even charge you monthly to use their platform. If you gather a bigger clientele or start getting regular buyers, this may be cheaper than giving a percentage of your profits to the site.

Some people may want you to wear shoes for an extended period of time before posting the item to them. Others may even just want a picture of your feet in well-worn shoes. Some might want the insoles of your shoes. The possibilities are endless. If you are willing to wear shoes for extended periods, then this may be the money maker for you.

Make money ironing

Now, this is not necessarily dirty laundry, but it is handling laundry. We recently wrote a great article all about making money from ironing. We discussed what is involved, what you will need, where to begin and some top tips to make as much money as possible.

If you work part time, are retired or are a stay-at-home parent, this may just be the gig for you. Doing ironing for money in your spare time as a college or university student for some cash in hand during your studies is also a great idea. Stick the telly on, make a cuppa and get ironing.

Top tips

Although it may seem straight forward, there are thing to bear in mind, as with any time you are offering a service for money.

Of course, you need to think about what services you are going to offer. Of course, you are going to do ironing. But are there any particular add-ons you are willing to do, like picking up and dropping off people’s garments? As with starting a laundry service, could you include extras such as sewing on a missing button or restitching a seam?

Next, you need to start thinking about what you are going to charge. You don’t want to charge so much that people don’t bother. If prices are too high, people will begrudgingly do their ironing themselves, even if it is a chore they despise. They may also go elsewhere, so make sure you have done your research and know what your competition is charging.

Make sure you have a working iron and a good ironing board. Old irons can wear out and do a less efficient press. It is also a good idea to practice on your own clothes if you are fairly new to ironing – especially items such as shirts and blouses which can be tricky to get right.

Sell laundry bags

dirty laundry bags

This may not be making money from dirty laundry itself, but you are making money from the needs of people who have dirty laundry. (A.k.a., most people!) If you have an artistic flare, why not make laundry bags to sell? On the online marketplace Etsy, many people sell personalised laundry bags. The current sale prices are anywhere from around £9.99 to £30. This depends on the size or print on the bag.

Now, this may not be for everyone, that is completely understandable. But, if you love arts and crafts and have a keen eye for design, it may be something to think about. We have previously written an article about making money by selling personalised items and selling personalised laundry bags is no different.

Some websites sell drawstring bags in bulk, for less that £1 per bag. These plain white cotton drawstring bags are 96 pence each. If you bought 100 for £96 (plus £7.95 shipping), you’d be investing into your business. If you sold each bag for say, £10 a pop and asked the buyer to cover postage costs, you could be making a nice profit of almost £9 per bag. That’s almost £900 in your pocket!

What could you sell?

Now of course, it won’t be THAT straight forward, especially if you are going to personalise your bags. Perhaps you could hand stitch a person’s name or a print of their choice into the bag.

You could put a photo or design of their choice onto the bag using fabric transfers. You could even decorate the bag yourself with cool gems, buttons, beads and badges. If you have a little bit of money to invest, you could even buy a textile printing machine, which allows you to print onto fabrics.

Of course, you would charge the customer extra for specific designs, add-ons and personalisation. As previously mentioned within this article, shop around and look at how much the competition is charging. You want to find a happy medium between covering any costs for materials, your time and still making a bit of cash to put away.

This may not be for everyone, but if you are looking for a new, fun way to make money, why not explore it as an option? You never know, you may love it!

Top Ten Summer Jobs 2022 Edition

Reading Time: 13 mins

The sun is blazing and the summer holidays are just around the corner, but for many people the summer brings with it the need to pick up summer jobs: whether it’s to gather some much-needed holiday pennies, to fill a gap between other work or just to do something different during this most sunny of seasons.

Thankfully, there are plenty of summer jobs available around the UK, from the relatively easy to the more challenging, but all will get you out of the office, away from the shops and into a new adventure. So here’s our roundup of ten ways you can gain employment this summer.

FRUIT PICKING

seasonal jobs

Over the last few years there’s been a shortage of willing fruit pickers offering their services to British farms. As a result there are usually plenty of fruit-picking jobs available throughout the summer. If back-breaking toil isn’t your thing then you could try your hand at the checking of the fruit, the weighing, packaging, labelling and even sales in the farm shop.

What you’ll be picking will depend of course on the farm but also on the month. For example, strawberries and gooseberries are often picked from early June to mid July, plums and apples are picked in late August, and apples and pears are picked in September.

Your best bet would be to travel down to your local farm and speak to the owners directly. Also look out for adverts in local shop windows and village halls. Find a farmers’ market near you here and ask about any jobs going.

Picking Jobs is a useful website where you can put in a search for fruit picking in Europe and see what’s available. Anywork Anywhere has a similar set-up and can be used to search for all kinds of other seasonal jobs both here and abroad. When you see a job that interests you, email the employer directly giving a few basic details about yourself and the dates you can do.

You’ll be working outside so wear old casual clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. You may be standing in fields for hours on end so comfortable shoes are a must. You’ll also need a hat and some sun cream so you don’t get burnt. Insect repellent is a good idea, and make sure you drink plenty of water.

Earnings are likely to be cash in hand and if you earn enough you will be expected to take care of all your own taxes. It’s unlikely you’ll make a lot of money here so you may not exceed your personal income allowance. For this year, the personal allowance is £9,440 and £10,500  for people aged 65–74.

You’ll typically be paid minimum wage:

* £9.18 per hour for workers aged 21 and 22; £9.50 for workers 23 and over

* A development rate of £6.83 per hour for workers aged 18–20 inclusive

* £4.81 per hour for all workers under the age of 18 who are no longer of compulsory school age

Depending on the farm you’re working for, you might be paid hourly or daily, but sometimes you’re paid according to the amount you pick (e.g. you get x amount per kg or pound). This system is called ‘piecework’ and it’s fruitful (sorry) for those who work particularly hard.

WORKING THE commonwealth games

commonwealth games

From now until July 2022, there are dozens of great opportunities to get involved in the Games, as they will be recruiting a large number of roles across different work areas.

As all the 13,000 volunteering positions were taken up last August, there are still many jobs constantly being uploaded for different skill sets. To ensure that the games are a huge success they are hiring tens of thousands of contractors who will need people to fill their summer positions. These include security, stewarding, catering, cleaning, retail, transport and logistics. To register availability in any of these areas click here.

If you fancy a more fixed position working for The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games this summer, then the event will be held across the West Midlands, with 6,500 athletes and team officials from 72 nations and territories joining forces in a celebration of sport and culture, and you can work among them!

GARDENING

If you’re green-fingered then gardening for cash is an ideal way to make some extra money. Lots of people start thinking about the state of their garden in the weeks leading up to summer so it’s the ideal time to pounce on their insecurities!

Offer your family, friends, colleagues and neighbours your services as an expert lawn mower, weed eradicator and plant potter and you’ll be a renowned small-time gardener in no time at all.

Start attracting business by handing out cards and flyers (you can get free business cards printed from Vistaprint) and by knocking on doors. Once you’re up and running, word of mouth should spread and work should roll in on a regular basis.

Ideally, you’ll need your own lawnmower, garden tools and transportation to get from place to place.

In terms of tools, get yourself a sharp pair of secateurs, a pair of tough, skinny gloves and a long, thin trowel. There are plenty of different tools out there to help make your job in the garden a bit easier, and here’s a couple of useful websites:

* Robert Dyas

* Gardening Direct

Don’t think too big to begin with – offer basic services that people generally don’t have time to do themselves for a reasonable price. Professional gardening companies charge around £15 for simple tasks, so long as you can beat their quotes you should have plenty of business.

WORK A FESTIVAL

free festivals

Are you interested in getting FREE festival tickets? Fun in the sun at Reading festival might seem a world away at the moment, but if you want to get some free festival tickets, you need to start planning now. Being a charity volunteer will get you into the festival for nothing and you’ll only have to work a few shifts – then you can enjoy the music with everyone else!

You’ll need to join an events recruitment company – here are a few we tracked down for you:

* Festaff supplies casual staff for over a dozen music festivals in the UK including Bestival, Creamfields, Wickerman, Camp Bestival, Isle of Wight Festival, Sonispshere, Rockness and Beachdown. Some of these are currently recruiting, so if you’re interested fill out their application for summer positions.

* Delaware North Companies Ltd (DNC) runs a food and catering service at both Wembley Stadium and Emirates Stadium. They provide full training for all the roles and job vacancies range from bar staff to sous chef. See the Hospitality Staff website for full details on DNC job profiles and how to apply.

* Jam Staffing employs people for events all over the UK – they’re looking for waiters/waitresses, security staff, models and much more. You can apply through their website.

* For something a bit different, how about mobile catering with MJR Tom? This actually involves walking around events at all the major British stadiums and football clubs, plus the big British racecourses, and selling whatever it is you’re told to.

AIR BNB YOUR HOUSE OR GARAGE

Spare bedroom

Your part of the world could very well attract people to your very own B&B, run from your house. Think about what makes it special and what would encourage people to visit. Do you live in a picturesque village by the seaside or in a busy and bustling city? How close are you to transport links and tourist attractions? Could you offer weekday stays for commuting professionals? Is your area the sort of place that people will want (or need) to come to and stay in? Having a big house with lots of rooms is only half the battle won. Think about your unique selling point.

You might also consider doing a survey to find out what people want from a B&B. Send it to friends, family and colleagues to get a good range of responses. Use that to inform your plans. Once you get going, ask guests for feedback. Also ask them to review your place on TripAdvisor and Google – both of those are useful ways to get business in for free.

HOUSESITTING AND PETSITTING

How to make money from Firework Night

The summer is the perfect time to house sit – there are many more people going on holiday and if you can’t afford to go away this year it’s a great way to visit a different part of the country without forking out your hard-earned cash.

Housesitting basically involves looking after someone’s home while they’re away but it gives you the opportunity to visit another part of the country and make some money.

You’ll be asked to carry out the daily duties that would normally be done if the owners were present but the rest of the time is yours to relax. The work may also involve looking after an animal, so you need to make sure you don’t mind cleaning up the odd bit of dog poop here and there.

The easiest way to get work is to sign up for an agency. That way you also have the added security of insurance, which might be too much of a complication and expense otherwise. With an agency such as Trustedhousesitters you can expect to earn just less than two hours’ pay per day at the minimum wage. You’ll also be given an allowance for food and reimbursed for any travel costs. For pet-focused housesitting, the national agency Animal Aunts looks for people who can look after pets in all areas.

If you’d prefer to do it off your own back, advertise yourself in the local paper or on Gumtree, making sure you include the fact that you can provide personal references if required.

Depending on the arrangement you have with the homeowner you may have to commit to staying in the house for a certain proportion of the day – but this is a great opportunity to catch up on reading, writing, knitting or even a spot of paperwork.

Housesitting is unlikely to make you vast sums of money – long-term house minders can earn about £9 a day, plus food and travel allowances and short-term housesitters can earn between £8 and £10 an hour.

However – you can make a lot more money if you can hire out your own house while you stay at someone else’s.

If you live in a popular city or a very attractive part of the country, why not rent out your home at the same time? Simply put it up for rent on Gumtree, Spareroom or through a local lettings agent that specialises in short, holiday lets. Short-term lets are usually much more lucrative than long-term ones so you could find yourself making £100s while you’re away. To find out more about renting your house, or part of it, see our article on renting a room out.

BE A CHILD MINDER

benefits

Great with kids? Get paid to look after someone’s offspring for a quick summer money maker. A spot of good weather (hopefully) will mean that you can take the children for fun days out and not be stuck indoors too often.

Professional childminding and babysitting is a different story. If you’d like to look after the children of strangers on a regular basis, you’ll need to be a registered childminder and have the proper checks to be able to work without fear of a lawsuit.

You can register with agency websites such as Sitters and Childcare.co.uk where you can advertise as a babysitter for free. The agency then makes all the arrangements for you. Also, drop a note through your neighbours’ doors to let them know you’re available to look after their children. You could even send out a group email to friends or work colleagues informing them of your new babysitting venture – just make sure you include a price list to establish the fact that it isn’t a free service from the start.

Having a DBS check (formerly CRB) will make it easier for you to get work and most agencies will insist on it anyway.

Written references from people for whom you have already worked as a babysitter or other type of carer will also make a big difference. However, even if you haven’t given babysitting a go before you can get character references from a teacher, your bank manager or another professional who knows you well.

Be prepared for every eventuality whilst looking after children. Keep contact numbers for parents and emergency contacts if for some reason you can’t get hold of them. Ask about allergies, medication or anything else you might need to know.

If you need some inspiration when it comes to entertaining children, Day Out With The Kids is a brilliant website full of places to visit for both indoor and outdoor activities in your region.

Feel free to charge anything around £5–10 an hour. The long summer holidays can be a real pain for working parents so there should be plenty of work.

If you do find that you’re struggling to get work, initially keeping your rates down to a minimum will do your reputation a lot of good – then you can always increase your fee later on once you’ve established some regular clients.

PET WALKING

Lots of dogs walking on leads

If you’re fit, active and enjoy spending time with animals then walking people’s pets can be a really enjoyable and easy way to make some quick cash.

Find your first customers just by asking around. Start by asking neighbours and others you know if they require your services. If your workload seems a little feeble, you could try advertising with a poster or notice at your local veterinary clinic or in local shop windows.

After that, if you’re good and reliable, you’ll get publicity through word of mouth. Many dog walkers get clients when they meet them in the park. Get yourself some free business cards from Vistaprint and hand them out to dog owners when you’re on a walk. You can also put an ad up on the notice board in your local vet practice, pet shops and at rescue centres if they’ll let you.

You can also join a local dog-walking agency such as PetPals or register yourself as a dog-walking company at NarpsUK. Narps members can access discounted rates for insurance and it can also help you find more work through its pet-owner postcode search facility. You’ll earn less per hour but the work would be more regular. Just put ‘dog walking’ into your search engine with your local area and see what comes up. There are lots of little, local agencies all over the country.

The biggest expense will be insurance. Pet Business Insurance offers a number of packages including:

* Public liability – if the dog runs out into the road and causes a pile up, or bites someone.

* Care, custody and control – looks after the pet itself if it gets injured while under your care

* Loss of key – if you lose your employer’s keys they’ll pay to change the locks.

You’ll also need a ready supply of pooper-scoopers and bags and perhaps some doggy toys (but owners will usually supply their own).

SELL YOUR PHOTOS

make money

If you’re a dab hand with a camera, try selling your summer holiday snaps to photo agencies and libraries. Each time one of your photos is sold you can earn a commission – most sites will ask for a selection of photos to test the quality and there’s a chance they’ll be rejected but if you don’t try you’ll never know! Also, there are lots of photo sites to choose from and there’s nothing to stop you from signing up with all of them.

Even if you’re not going away why not get out and about with your camera and start taking some pictures of subjects and images that take your interest? For an idea of what stock libraries are looking for visit the websites themselves – they usually need images of people’s hometown, street, ethnic groups and women in business and work shots.

Microstock sites such as Fotolia often have a travel section for professional-quality photographs of interesting things and places. Others such as 123RF operate in a similar way.

You can also try contacting smaller travel magazines – send an email to their pictures editor and find out their rates.

If you want to submit a photo to sell, it has to be an RGB JPEG saved at a high setting (such as Photoshop level 10 setting or 48 MB in size). They must not be compressed file sizes. Usually the higher the image resolution, the more you’ll be paid, so keep files large.

Do be careful about the pictures you submit – pictures of identifiable houses or models (any person who’s in the photo) will in most cases need a release form. This is signed by the model or house owner to cite that their permission has been given for you to profit from their personal belongings. Also, some properties and logos are trademarked and therefore will not be accepted.

What you charge is completely up to you, but it’s advisable to only charge what you think people can afford. Try not to rob little old ladies of their pension, but feel free to charge anything up to £15 an hour to socialites with pocket-sized pooches.

BE A LIFEGUARD

summer jobs

If you’re a strong swimmer why not become a lifeguard over the summer for the perfect summer job? It’s a great way to meet people and although it’s a serious job (your role is to look after and possibly save someone’s life) it can be lots of fun too.

There are two types of lifeguard:

* Swimming pool lifeguards – employed by a leisure centre, private club, local authority, hotel or holiday centre

* Beach lifeguards – employed by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

Once you’re qualified try sites like Leisurejobs, Gapyear.com and Gumtree. Also, contact your local pool and ask about vacancies.

To be a pool lifeguard you’ll need one of the following qualifications:

* The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ)

* The National Aquatic Rescue Standard (NaRS): Pool Lifeguard

* NPLQ and NaRS courses are based at local swimming pools or leisure centres and are run through approved centres, such as colleges and swimming clubs.

To be a beach lifeguard you’ll need one of the following qualifications:

* RLSS National Beach Lifeguard Qualification

* National Aquatic Rescue Standard (NaRS): Beach Lifeguard, run by the Surf Life Saving Association of Great Britain (SLSA GB).

These qualifications can be gained by either training with a commercial training organisation like Harlyn Surf School in Cornwall, or by joining a local RLSS Lifeguard club or SLSA GB life-saving club as a volunteer and training with them.

You can get information on all lifeguard courses in your area through the Learndirect careers advice website. Expect to pay between £100 and £150, although if you receive benefits you may be entitled to discounts. Because you’ll be working with or around children, you’ll need to undergo a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service check).

FINAL NOTES on summer jobs

Summer brings new chores – lawns have to be mown more often and cars washed more frequently. You’d be surprised at how many people are willing to pay someone to take these tasks off their hands – and mowing lawns in the sun is far from unpleasant!

Put an ad on Gumtree, get yourself some free business cards to hand out and post through doors, put an ad up in your local Post Office or shop, and spread the word. You can pick and choose the jobs you take on, and you can work on your tan as you earn!
