How to make money selling photos of yourself

Reading Time: 6 mins

Selling photos of yourself can be a great way to make extra money. With mobile phone cameras getting better and better every year, it is no surprise we take more photographs of ourselves than ever. In particular, ‘selfies’, which are self-portrait style photographs taken with a mobile phone, are the most popular mode of taking photographs.

As of January 2021, there were 53 million active social media accounts within the UK. This is equal to 77.9 per cent of the population having a social media account. There is no surprise, then, that Britons take their own picture a whopping 1.2 billion times a year in total.

We all take pictures of ourselves, whether it is to share them on social media or send to friends and family. But what if you could make money from the photos you take of yourself? It is entirely legal, and a legitimate way to make some extra cash.

Sell stock images

taking photos

Stock images are those which are supplied for specific uses and are often licenced. They are made available to those who pay a fee, which goes directly to the artist who produced the images. The host website, which displays the photos, will also take a small cut of the fee.

Most often, stock images are produced for editorial use, appearing in newspapers, magazines, online and even on the television. There are plenty of websites available for you to upload your photos onto in order to make some extra cash.

Shutterstock:

Perhaps one of the most well-known stock image providers, Shutterstock have paid out over $1 billion to their contributors in the past 15 years. As a shutter stock contributor, you will receive between 15 and 40 per cent of the total price Shutterstock receives when your content is downloaded by other users. Your commission is based on the number of downloads your photos receive.

iStock:

Owned by Getty Images, iStock is used by 1.5 million users in 200 countries globally. You can apply to be an iStock contributor in three easy steps. Once completed, you will be able to start earning commission.

Adobe Stock:

Adobe is a name known by millions of internet users. You earn 33% of all royalties for every photo you sell. The more photos you upload, the more earning potential you have on the website.

Here are a few more of the best stock image websites to consider:

Try your hand at modelling

Modelling is one of the most obvious ways to make money from photos of yourself. It may seem a silly idea, but you don’t have to look like Kate Moss to try modelling. In fact, many modelling agencies want to find people of all different shapes and sizes to model for them.

You may not have considered modelling previously, but you may be just what a certain company or agency are looking for. There are also a huge number of different types of modelling, from catalogue to advert modelling. There are also many agencies in search of hand and foot models, and even hair models!

We have previously written an article all about modelling and how you can get yourself scouted. Read it here.

Take some headshots

It may seem farfetched, but if you have ever fancied getting into acting, or becoming an extra for film and television, getting some headshots taken is the place to start.

A headshot is an actor’s brand and can help them market themselves in the entertainment industry. It is key to helping actors secure auditions. Plus, having a visual image of yourself can help others remember you for future work. Although you will not make money from the photo itself, it will help you make money down the line.

We understand acting may not be for everyone. But even if you don’t fancy the spotlight yourself, you can make money as an extra. Whilst filming, TV shows and movies are always on the lookout for people to help out. Plus, the pay can be pretty good for an easy and fun days’ work. Plus, it can be a great experience and a chance to meet new people!

Rates of pay vary across the UK, but there are three main agreements used in and around London when it comes to paying extras. It is always a good idea to check with the production team beforehand, but here are the three main pay agreements:

The FAA/PACT Agreement

The rate is £92.69 for a 9 hour work period including a meal break, between the hours of 7am and 10pm.

The BBC Equity Agreement

£86.40 for a continuous 9 hour period, including up to 8 hours of work and a meal break of at least an hour. Or, a 7 hour continuous period without a meal break.

ITV Equity Agreement

£79.89. Up to 10 hours, during which up to 8 hours of work may take place. Not required to give any individual characterisation or dialogue.

As mentioned, guidelines vary across the UK and between production companies, but it gives you a rough guideline. Plus, there are many opportunities to earn extra money on set, such as working night-time hours or bagging yourself a small amount of dialogue. Plus, if you have a special skill, such as horse riding, dancing or being able to drive, you may be paid more.

We have previously written a thorough and helpful guide all about how to become a film and TV extra. You can read it here.

Become a social media influencer

It may seem like a long shot, but becoming an online influencer can make you plenty of money. An influencer is someone who has a certain level of influence online. They may have a large number of ‘followers’, people who subscribe to them, engage with their content or even look up to them.

Brands and companies use influencers to help them promote or advertise their products and services to their audiences. Some influencers may be paid a set fee for doing a post, whereas others may be paid commission for every sale made as a result of their promotion.

Although it may seem difficult to become an influencer, a new brand of ‘micro-influencers’ is on the rise. A micro-influencer is someone with 3,000 followers or more. This means you don’t have to have millions of followers to start earning money from photographs of yourself.

According to Tribe, micro-influencers can earn anywhere from £50 to £250 per sponsored post. A photograph of yourself holding a product or a short video discussing the benefits of a product could earn you a nice little income.

But how can you grow your social media influence? Pick a niche, start posting, and begin to engage with other accounts similar to your own. It is all about networking and creating new contacts online. Once you start to gain a small following, you can reach out to brands and companies and ask them about a working relationship. You will be surprised at how many brands are willing to work with smaller influencers, particularly small and local brands.

Tips to take good photos

taking photos

Of course, to make decent money it is imperative the photographs taken are of the best quality possible. Luckily, you do not have to be a professional photographer to begin selling your photos, and many mobile phone cameras take beautiful, high quality images.

There are also plenty of helpful guides and tips online to help you take beautiful photos on your phone. The School of Photography suggests a few ways to ensure you get the best photos possible via your smartphone. These tips include taking multiple shots, use good lighting, and natural lighting where possible, and using editing tools to help transform the photos your capture.

It is also a good idea to have a play around with the camera you are using, whether it be your mobile phone or a digital camera. This will help you understand how the camera works, any settings you can change and different modes to help you capture the perfect shot.

So, why not try your hand at photography and make money selling photos of yourself? You may be surprised at how much extra cash you can make!

Make money for Christmas: Christmas jobs available now

Reading Time: 10 mins

Have a very merry Christmas this year and earn extra cash doing one of the many Christmas jobs available from October on. As we head into early autumn, now is the perfect moment to start looking, and particularly if you’d like to work as Santa or an elf in department stores and shopping centres.

You may associate Christmas jobs with the Post Office and high street stores bringing in extra workers during the holiday season, but the demand is higher and more diverse now. Even online retailers need extra staff. Take Amazon, for example. The site hit as many as 306 items sold every second on Cyber Monday a few years back and received around 6,000 orders per minute during Amazon Prime Day in 2017. Similarly, online fashion retailer Asos recorded 33 orders per second at its peak time. That’s a lot of shoes, jumpers and skirts! No wonder big retailers are taking on extra staff and it could be a way for you to land a Christmas job.

Those huge numbers may give you an insight into the way online shopping is changing our lives and the job market. As such, increasingly more jobs are created to deal with online demand rather than your typical shop floor work. That’s crucial for young people because it’s often the first step on their career ladder.

Be a postie or sorter with Royal Mail

Santa's hand holding letters

Unsurprisingly, Christmas is the busiest time for the Royal Mail. The flurry of cards and gifts has to be delivered – and on time. This means long queues in the post office at times but it’s also a sure sign they’ll need extra help in the run-up to the holidays. Perhaps that’s your Christmas job sorted!

As a Christmas casual employee, you can choose from a mix of full and part time indoor sorting positions. That’s early, late and night shifts. Those are available from early November through until 23rd December at many various sites across the country.

If you look at the Royal Mail website here, you will find pages and pages of Christmas vacancies in all parts of the UK. Because these jobs do go fairly quickly, it’s a good idea to apply as soon as you can.

And what about the money? Well, the rates vary from £11.40-£15.75 an hour depending what you do and were you’re based. Plus, you get to help spread the Christmas joy!

Magazine/newspaper in letter box

Yet another potential Christmas gig. If you don’t mind getting out and about, there’s definitely money to be made delivering catalogues and brochures over the festive season.

The great thing about this sort of work is that you can do it in your own time. Perhaps run some deliveries before going into your other job or when you have a spare moment from preparing for Christmas.

If that’s something you’d like to pursue, check out websites such as:

And take a look at your local papers and newsagents for work opportunities.

One thing to note is that you should watch out for companies asking for cash deposits for the items you’re delivering. Avoid those because they’re likely to be scams.

Check out our article here which has a lot more information on how to get work delivering leaflets and catalogues in your area.

Deliver parcels

UPS

Delivery giant UPS plans to hire a staggering number of 100,000 seasonal employees at thousands of locations this year, anticipating a surge in package volume that begins in November and continues through to January.

It’s a big number, but UPS is a big company. Spanning over 220 countries, the service delivers 20.7 million packages every day. In the UK, for instance, UPS employs approximately 8,000 permanent staff. It operates 60 facilities and it boasts a delivery fleet of more than 3,400 vehicles across the country.

Because the demand is huge, they need people. What’s more, the full and part-time seasonal positions can be an entry point for permanent employment at UPS. For example, many senior UPS executives – including CEO David Abney – started their careers with the company as part-time employees.

If you like the sound of it, you can apply online by visiting UPSjobs.com.

christmas Bar Work

Christmas bartender

Christmas isn’t only a busy time for the high street shops. Pubs and bars, for instance, often hire extra staff over holiday periods too. Why not checking for Christmas job opportunities at your local?

It can be a sociable job and if you’re willing to work on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve, you can expect double the usual hourly rate. Apply now as these jobs tend to go pretty quickly, though.

Find out how to get bar work and restaurant work in our article here.

Promote clubs at christmas

Group dancing in a club wearing santa hats

Although it may sound too good to be true, you really can get paid to party. And Christmas is a busy party season.

Clubs in cities all over the country need more punters to come through their doors and spend money. Do you love clubbing, have lots of friends and boast good organisational skills? Then it may just be a Christmas job for you. The way it works is that you can make cash by bringing extra people through the doors and spending money at the bar. This is where being sociable and having a large network of people, both on social media and offline, will truly come in handy.

Admittedly, during the Christmas and New Year period, most clubs won’t need much help attracting customers. Still, they might need club promoters on quieter nights like Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

As the venues get busier, they’ll also need more doormen, bar staff and hosts and hostesses. Perhaps check with your local clubs now and find out what thy may be needing over the festive season so that you can be the first one they speak to.

For more tips, read our article here with info on how to make money by partying!

sell your stuff online

Now for some more home-based activities to help you make extra cash ahead of Christmas.

Start with selling. If you have a spare moment, why not upload all the things you don’t want to various online selling sites and use that money to buy presents. While it isn’t strictly a Christmas job, it’s a great way to make some money. You could even buy gifts on the same sites you’re selling your stuff. Very convenient!

ziffit

Sell your unwanted books, CDs, DVDs and games for instant cash using the trading site Ziffit. It’s a great website to keep in mind when you’re decluttering your house.

Using it is very easy – simply scan the bar-code on each item you’re selling using the Ziffit app and you’ll find out instantly how much you could get for each thing.

If you’re happy with the figure, pack up your stuff ready to be sent. Then, you can choose to be paid to your bank, via PayPal or by cheque. Postage is free, too. The process is quick and easy – take a look here for more details on how to sell on Ziffit.

ebay

ebay app on smartphone

For more ways to earn from home, try eBay. As you know, you can sell pretty much anything there. In fact, even if your items are broken or damaged, they might sell too. It’s very straightforward: simply prepare your things, upload photos, describe them well and let people bid.

Another great thing about eBay is that once you have made money selling your junk, you can then buy Christmas presents for less on the site.

But that’s not to say eBay is your only option. In fact, there’re some other places you can sell stuff as we advise in our article here. It’s certainly worth trying your local Facebook groups, Gumtree and eBid for different items as well. Still, though, for gadgets, collectibles and more, eBay is very handy!

cardyard

Sometimes what you receive isn’t exactly what you hoped for. Do you have gift vouchers you got for Christmas which are still sitting idly in your wallet – and you’re not likely to use them?

If so, you can easily turn them into cash on Cardyard, a website enabling you to trade in your unwanted gift vouchers. You can easily earn some money this way and then buy new gift cards for less.

More ways to make money at Christmas

be a santa

Little boy in elf costume whispering to santa

You can work for high street shops and supermarkets in roles other than serving customers. Brace yourself; your Christmas job hunt is about to get merry.

For instance, big stores, shopping centres, entertainment venues and even outdoor council-run areas look for a Santa, Mrs Claus and elves for their kids’ grottos.

As you can learn from our article, there’s always a demand for Santas and elves. This could be your perfect Christmas job if you’re a natural performer, have some experience entertaining kids and, importantly, have a DBS check. Yes, you could really make money dressing up as a Christmas hero. Who wouldn’t want to embody the spirit of Christmas – and make money while at it?

make christmas hampers to sell

Christmas hamper

Hampers make for a thoughtful gift everyone loves but they can be pretty expensive.

That’s actually good news for you. If you’re creative, you could make hampers and sell them at car boot sales, markets and even through local independent shops. It’s something you can easily do in your spare time at home. Perhaps you could even get your kids involved in getting the hampers ready?

To help you out, we’ve put together a detailed guide including information and links to products in our article on how to make hampers to sell.

So, let your imagination run wild and make hampers using boxes, pots and even watering cans. Perhaps have a look around your house and you might find other creative containers.

So long as you know how to make things look pretty, you can use things such as:

  • cosmetics and foods from pound shops
  • home-made cakes and sweets
  • artisan oils, spices and vinegars
  • home-made cosmetics and toiletries (learn how to make them here)
  • anything else that looks cool!

Get creative and whatever doesn’t sell, you can recycle as presents for your friends and family.

Blogging: How to Make Money Doing It

Reading Time: 3 mins

You can make money as a blogger in dozens of ways. For a beginner, the easiest way to earn money in blogging will either be through affiliate marketing or ads. We will explore this subject in greater depth and learn how you can get started with earning money in blogging. Many bloggers have made as much money as entrepreneurs in other fields, which shows you the raw potential in this industry. Even newspapers have begun to switch to a more online medium as print has steadily and slowly gone out of fashion. At the same time, online newspaper subscriptions have steadily risen by six percent each year.

Affiliate Marketing

Post an affiliate link on your blog article, and you can receive a number of clicks on it each day. Whenever someone buys a product after clicking on the link, you will earn a percentage of commission. One of the most trusted platforms on affiliate marketing is Amazon, and while they do have a high conversion rate, you should understand how they pay less in comparison to some of the other affiliates.

You may want to look around before arriving at a decision. With affiliate marketing, how much you earn will heavily depend on the amount of traffic that your blog receives. Hiring an SEO consultant can help you to rank higher in the search engines, which will drive organic traffic to your website. When you optimize site infrastructure, Google can rank your website higher to bring in more traffic. They can also pinpoint things that might annoy your customers and cause them not to want to click on your site links.

Putting on Ads

You can choose from several great advertising agencies for ads on your website. One of the first ones that you might start with is Ezoic because they have no pageview limits anymore on signups. Many people recommend Google AdSense, however Google pays very little in comparison to other ad agencies, and they have a requirement that you earn $100 before you can receive the payout. In the past, Google AdSense was all you had for the lower levels of traffic.

Ezoic is often a far better choice, and while they have a $20 payout minimum, you can reach it much faster because they pay better. Once you become a bigger blog, you might sign up with Mediavine or Adthrive. Multiple ad agencies exist, and you simply have to find one that works for you. Keep in mind, you must set up a blog with a true domain because the free blogs won’t let you put ads on them. Study ad placement before you get started to ensure that you will maximize your ad earnings. The biggest advantage of ads and affiliates is how it is a highly passive form of income. You could offer a physical product, but it doesn’t offer nearly the passivity.

Sell Digital Products

How well this works will depend on your niche, but digital products offer you an advantage in that you can earn 100 percent of the profit. Let’s say that you made sales with affiliates. The biggest problem with making sales from affiliates is how you will typically only earn a percentage. This depends on the affiliate program, but it ranges from five percent to 30 percent.

Some of the more lucrative affiliate programs will offer up to 50 percent. Digital products give you the entire thing, and it feels good to design a product that people love. Some of the digital products that people have sold include eBooks, courses, video tutorials and workshops. Selling digital products can help you make money online when your skills lie more in product management as opposed to content creation.

Sell Space on Your Newsletter

What you earn will vary, but it can range anywhere from $15 to $50 per CPM. For sponsored emails, you can earn anywhere from $100 to $250. Giving a weekly or monthly mention to a brand can bring you a fair amount of cash. Keep in mind, you will need to build your mailing list because how much you earn heavily depends on its size. Newsletters will also offer you the opportunity to place some affiliate links. You see some impressive exits from companies that built up a good-sized newsletter. DailyCandy, for example, sold for $125 million in an acquisition with Comcast.

Selling Products And Making Profit Via Facebook

Reading Time: 4 mins

Social media has entered the ecommerce game and is making waves.

In reality, social media has played a strong role in ecommerce since the beginning. Facebook began selling ads back in 2007, and the visual focus of Instagram has made it a strong platform for fashion retailers even before they introduced shopping features.

What has changed recently is the concerted efforts by these platforms to improve sales and even introduce in-app purchases. Facebook has entered this world, although many brands still direct shoppers to their own website.

With over two billion users on Facebook, it is an opportunity that you cannot pass by. You can make sales and grow your brand.

Here, we are going to give you a crash course on Facebook ecommerce and what role it needs to play in your overarching ecommerce strategy.

What is Facebook Store?

Facebook commerce began from the ground up, with Facebook pages being created to sell and trade items. This was made official in 2016 with Facebook Marketplace. You can list sponsored ads on Facebook marketplace, but the platform is targeted at individual sellers of used goods.

Where you need to focus your efforts is on Facebook Store, which is sometimes called a Facebook Shop. Whether you are setting up a new business or you have used a list of our businesses to buy one, a Facebook store makes sense.

Facebook Store is a page that enables you to sell your items so that you can reach a broader consumer base. One of the great things about a Facebook Shop page is that you don’t need to have an existing online store in order to run this. You could run your entire operation through Facebook if you wish, which is a good opportunity for start-up retailers that are looking for an outlet to sell their goods.

There are a number of benefits associated with using Facebook Store, including the fact that you can get your products to appear in the Facebook Marketplace, see stats on your sales, visits, and more, communicate with your customers directly through the page, organise your products into categories and collections, and you can add an unlimited number of products.

Setting up your Facebook store

So, let’s take a look at how you can set up your Facebook store. In order to do this, you are going to need a Facebook account and a Facebook business page. You may already have these. Apart from this, you must adhere to the following: agree with Facebook’s Merchant Terms and sell physical items. If you are based in the United States, you are also going to need to have a tax identification number and a link to a valid bank account.

If you tick all of the boxes, here are the steps you’re going to need to take to set up your Facebook store…

  • Go to your Facebook page to configure the Shop page.
  • Set up your shop details.
  • Configure your payments.
  • Add a product to your Facebook store. You’ll be able to see an Add Product button, making this step pretty straightforward.
  • Manage your products. You can do this under Products in the Publishing Tools section.
  • Manage your orders. You can do this under Pending Orders in the Publishing Tools section.

Remember – Facebook is social media

It is important to remember that the store aspect of Facebook is effectively social media. You need followers. You have a business account and you need to use it as social media to organically show up in feeds and then draw people to your page where they will see products. Even if someone does not purchase your products, you’re going to be growing your brand visually.

Therefore, it is important to think about creating shareable content and looking for ways to enhance your social media presence and brand engagement. Some of the ways that you can do this include:

  • Make connections with social media influencers.
  • Run Facebook dynamic ads.
  • Add a chatbot. This ensures customers get their questions answered immediately.
  • Engage with fan groups and other groups related to your business, for example, if you sell beauty products, make sure you connect with related pages.
  • Posting live Facebook videos. It is no secret that video takes the top spot for engagement.
  • Post shoppable videos, otherwise known as ecommerce or interactive technology. These are videos that enable customers to click on items.

The challenge of Facebook is time management

The issue with Facebook Store optimisation is that a lot of the aspects of making effective social media posts are creative and time-consuming. You can find yourself working on this all day, every day. Plus, there are other ecommerce platforms that teams need to be on (for example, Google Shopping and Amazon), and these platforms all require extensive and specific product listing data.

This is why you need to invest in an ecommerce platform that will enable you to automate the tasks that are time-consuming and do not need to be carried out manually. Your ecommerce platform will ensure you have everything regarding your online sales at your fingertips; you can easily track everything from inventory to sales made to shipping. You can then automate tasks and create templates so everything moves a lot easier and quicker, with scheduled posts an option too.

Make sure to gather and analyse feedback

Again, this is something that ecommerce platforms can assist with. You can pull data from across the web on customer trends, allowing you to tailor your activities, see what works, and optimise your efforts, so that you are continually improving. You will also be able to receive important data about your Facebook Store, i.e. purchases made, shopping cart abandonment rates and so on, and this can help you to move forward and make effective changes.

As you can see, there is no denying that Facebook Store presents an exceptional opportunity for businesses that sell products online today. However, this is only going to be the case if you go about it in the right way. Managing everything manually is simply not feasible, so take the time to find an effective software solution.
