How to have a guaranteed income during lockdown

Reading Time: 3 mins

One way to still make money during this difficult time is matched betting.

But how easy is it to do during lockdown?

It goes without saying that the last month or so has been hugely disruptive. Obviously, there are far more important things in the world than matched betting at the moment. You may even think matched betting is not possible in these relatively ‘sportless’ times.

However, matched betting is far from dead and can provide a valuable financial lifeline. Yes, the limited sporting events makes things tricky but there are still plenty of ways to earn money using matched betting and its principles.

Horse Racing still on!

While the UK horse racing scene is currently on pause, the same cannot be said for a lot of other regions (particularly in the USA). As a result, whilst the number of races is drastically reduced, you can still get horse racing bets down. Meaning, you can still benefit from sign up offers.

Not only that but Betfred, Unibet, Paddy Power and William Hill are all running daily reload offers (for existing customers) on these US horse races. So, there is plenty of daily profit being left on the table if you have not been getting involved with these so far.

Top tip for tackling horse racing at the moment is to not sink too much time into looking for odds on races throughout the day. It is far more productive to only look at said races when there is 30 minutes, or less, left before the start.  The slight downside of this is that due to the races being in the US, this will mean your matched betting will be primarily done in the evenings at the moment.

Esports is now a thing!

How to have a guaranteed income during lockdown

For the uninitiated, esports is the competitive scene for online multiplayer gaming. Now, before you scoff at the idea of gamers being classed as athletes, it is worth remembering that there is more money in esports at the moment than a lot of the more well-established sports.

The prize pools for example, are worth significantly more than say – a darts tournament. And it would appear that the bookmakers are starting to take notice of this emerging market. Whilst we are yet to see many reload offers focused on e-sports, the bookmakers are certainly offering odds on these markets – and Heads&Heads has that data on our Oddsmatching software. So, if traditional sports are letting you down on the Oddsmatching Software, esports is there to pick up the slack and help you make a profit on your welcome offers.

Sport will likely return before social distancing ends!

Based on the conversations happening across all major sports, it seems likely that a lot of sport will return behind closed doors in May.

As it stands, German football will return in early May, along with European horse racing (with the UK likely to follow in late May). Whilst the Premier League was earmarked to return in late June, recent talks appear to indicate that the season is unlikely to finish. However, most pleasing of all is that Ascot will be on behind closed doors – which for matched bettors is worth around £1,000 extra profit.

Unfortunately for the general populace, these sports may be back before we’re actually allowed to go and see them in person – let alone go to work or not queue outside your local supermarket.

On the plus side, the return of sports will mean matched betting, once again, will be in full swing and give you something to do while stuck inside – and more importantly give your household an additional income.

Further, bookmakers will be desperate for the cash flow after what will have been a very tough couple of months. Will they improve their welcome/reload offers? We think this unlikely. However, they may be less quick to restrict accounts they suspect of matched betting – meaning you will be able to extract more profit than you otherwise would.

Conclusion

Matched betting has not and will not be going anywhere. Yes, profit has taken a little knock in the absence of major sport, but there is still money to be made. Money which, for a lot of people in the UK, is absolutely crucial right now.

For those in the awful position of not being able to work at all, or seeing their income reduced, matched betting can provide a partial safety net by earning without risking anything. Will it be enough to replace your usual wage? Probably not. But will it be enough to help cover some bills? Absolutely.

To help lessen the initial financial commitment of trying matched betting, Heads&Heads are giving you 30 days Premium access for just £1. Not only that, but there is a 30 day money back guarantee on that £1. We can’t say fairer than that.

Use discount code “STAYHOME” on the payment page after selecting either the Premium monthly or Premium yearly payment plan.

Best of luck and stay safe!

Post-Lockdown Job Hunting and Work Conditions

Reading Time: 4 mins

Many people have lost their jobs from the coronavirus crisis – while others have used self-isolation to contemplate a new career. Job hunting – and work – will be different in the months (possibly years) to come.

So, how can you find work in the post-COVID-19 world – and what should you expect?

How to find work

Finding local work won’t be a simple case of pavement-pounding like before.

Businesses may be open, but many will still operate from home. Closed offices and premises might be off-putting to job hunters – but all you need to do is move your search online!

We’ve got a hefty article here with 45 ways to find a job – many of which involve using the internet to source your next role.

You can also use local groups, like Facebook groups or NextDoor, to post your skills and that you’re looking for work. Many businesses will also post adverts on sites like Gumtree, too.

It’s worth updating your online CV on LinkedIn, too: lots of employers and recruiters use this to search for potential candidates.

Video Interviews

Expect video interviews as standard while you're job hunting

Social distancing is likely to be in place for a long time after lockdown is lifted. That means companies will want to avoid unnecessary contact with people who aren’t staff or essential customers.

Also, with more home working in place lately, businesses have seen the light when it comes to the benefits of video calls. It saves everyone time and keeps people safe, too!

Make sure you have a suitable video call setup ready for your video interviews. If you live with other people, tell them when your interview is booked so they know not to disrupt you. Set up a suitable background, too: sitting with your back to a window means the interviewer can’t see you properly!

Headphones are entirely acceptable on video calls, and often provide better audio quality than using your laptop or computer speakers. If you’re using your phone, see if you can get a stand to keep it steady so you’re not moving it during the interview.
Dress to impress, too! Video interviews still mean you’re giving a first impression – so dust off your business wear and brush your hair!

Home Working

The majority of businesses that didn’t have to close during lockdown moved their staff to remote working. Some companies will want to bring everyone back to the office as soon as they can – but many have now seen how remote working improves productivity.

When you’re job hunting, ask employers what they expect the current and future work environment to look like. Will you have a socially-distanced work space in an office? Or could you work from home? Perhaps it’ll be a combination of the two.

If you start a new job that is fully remote, your employer still has a duty of care to your work safety. That includes your work station: in an office, your desk needs to meet certain criteria, as does your chair and monitor. At home, they’re supposed to carry out a workstation assessment – but, realistically, that’s unlikely to happen.

What you can do, however, is request reasonable equipment to ensure you can do your job from home safely. For example, if you’re using a laptop on your sofa, that’s not doing your back and neck any good! Ask for a small desk and laptop riser to help eliminate potential posture problems.

You might be given the option to work from home or the office. Many people prefer an office environment, so it’s up to you – but requesting the ability to work flexibly (sometimes at home, sometimes in the office) will give you the best of both worlds.

While it’s not a legal requirement to accept a request for flexible working, it is a legal right of each employee to ask for it.

Flexible Childcare

One of the reasons you might want to ask for flexible working when you’re job hunting is childcare. Even though businesses may reopen before September, it looks like schools won’t. Arranging childcare when you’re back at work and the children are at home is a handful.

During lockdown, you probably got used to juggling home schooling with work or other responsibilities. Use this to your advantage and suggest you work remotely on the days childcare isn’t available.

Tighter Salaries or Employee Benefits

You'll have to negotiate harder for a good salary when job hunting after COVID19

Businesses have been hit hard in 2020. Even with Government financial support schemes, they’ll have suffered losses that could take a long time to recover.

Stagnation elsewhere, such as the property market, indicate an overall stalled economy for a time, too. This means your salary might not meet the expectations you had – or that promotions will come quickly. Even if things like the stock market bounce back fast, it’ll take a lot longer for those improvements to trickle down to salaries.

Job hunting means looking at the whole package to decide if you want to take the role. Employee benefits, such as subsidised gym memberships and private healthcare schemes, may also be affected. Voluntary additional pension contributions may not be in place, either.

This doesn’t mean you can’t try to negotiate when you’re accepting a job. High unemployment, however, does mean it’s an employer’s market – so you’ll need to be realistic in your negotiations!

Ask your job search questions

It’s all still up in the air, how everything’s going to turn out later this year and into the future. The things in this article are what we expect to happen – but you could see more radical changes even than this. We just don’t know!

Common Customer Service Mistakes to Avoid

Customers are the most important people to keep happy when you want to grow your business greatly. If they are facing a problem or issue with your product or services, they should be able to reach and contact you quickly to gain the required assistance, help or guidance to get rid of the issues as soon as possible. It is all about providing them with excellent services whenever and how they want. No business or organization can underestimate the significance of quality customer services. The ability to make your customers delighted with your services and making them feel valued is a golden rule to make your business flourish.

Here is how you can make your customers pleased by getting rid of common customer service mistakes. Otherwise, they have plenty of options regarding with whom to do business.

Not making smart and data-driven customer services decisions

In this era of analytics and data science, giant brands and companies leverage different types of customer service data to provide their customers with great services. Use of a customer service software is the best way to gain data analysis not only about your customers but to evaluate the performance of your customer care team. In this way, you can have insights on which customer services agent delivers great services and what areas need to be improved. Thus, don’t only rely on software to make decisions but also encourage your team to use their professional skills and expertise to provide users with personalized services experience.

Forcing customers to use a specific medium

Everyone has own communication preferences and you shouldn’t be forcing your customers to use a particular communication channel to contact you. For instance, if you export LinkedIn contacts and reach your connections to convert them into customers, don’t force them to communicate within LinkedIn but provide them with multiple options so they can conveniently reach and interact with your business. Limiting your customer service mediums gives your competitors a chance to grab your customers.

Surface-level understanding of Customers

Most of the businesses just contact their customers to make sales and then forget. Smart business owners and companies take time to get to know the customers more and gather more details about them like what they do, how they prefer to interact and what their corporate culture is. The more you know your customers, the better you will be able to present your products or services that fit their needs.

Only communicating when something went wrong

A dialogue or conversation shouldn’t always have to be started by the customer. Don’t wait until something go out of order to interact with customers but keep talking with your customers often to make them feel special and valued. The only communication with customers when things are out of order is known as reactive service. Smart businesses focus more on proactive customer services to build strong and trusted relationships with customers.

Impersonal Response

Using automated responses or common messages saved in your software is no doubt a smart way to save time on typing and respond to customer queries instantly. But you should remember to personalize each message before sending it to provide customers with a personalized experience. You can personalize a saved message within moments by adding the customer’s name in it. Commonly used customer service phrases annoy the customers more. So, try to send personalized responses to make customers feel special.

Inconsistent customer experience

If your customer care department is quick to pick up calls but the IT team is not there to respond to emails or social media messages, then your customer services are bitty and inconsistent. Customer interaction via different communication mediums should relatively be consistent for each of your customers and the attitude of the customer service agents should also be positive and assistive. Sometimes customers are unable to use a particular channel to reach your business for help or assistance, and they opt for another option to contact your customer care team to get a quick and positive response. Responding to your customers in real-time no matter what medium they are using ensures that you value your customers and are always there to resolve their issues as soon as possible.

By avoiding all the above-mentioned customer service mistakes you can provide your customers with an excellent and faster experience to keep them engaged with your business for longer.

Make £200 a month in your spare time

Reading Time: 3 mins

Want to make £200 a month in your spare time, and top up your income without leaving the house?

Of course you do! Any extra income is likely to be very welcome, especially if we can do it without much effort, from our own computers or smartphones. And luckily, we’ve got a solution that might be just the thing.

Let us introduce you to 20Cogs, the online platform that allows you to earn money through online surveys, competitions, sign-ups and games.

Sound too good to be true? We promise you that it isn’t.

What is 20Cogs?

Woman making money online

20Cogs is a website that can see you net a cool £200 a month (or maybe even more) by answering questions and taking part in competitions for brands.

Brands will then use your answers as part of their market research, making this a win win situation for everyone.

So, how does it work? The 20Cogs site earns money as an advertiser, by hosting the competitions, survey content and so on, and engaging readers (ie, you). The money that they earn is then shared with you, as a potential customer who has interacted with the site.

Sign up for free, and you’ll be guided through the “offers” (games, surveys, competitions, etc) that are available to you. Once you’ve completed 20 of them, you’ll be paid by BACs or Paypal. Payments go through three times a week, meaning you’re never going to be waiting long before your cash hits your bank account.

There’s serious money at stake here: the company has paid almost £2 million out to its members so far. It’s time you got a slice of the pie…

How can 20Cogs help you make £200 a month in your spare time?

Sign up, and you’ll receive a welcome email that will offer up a few hints and tricks to start you on your journey. At the moment, there’s also a £5 welcome bonus available.

Answer an initial survey, letting 20Cogs know a bit about yourself, that will help them tailor the content that they send your way. Answer this survey and you’ll get another £5 added to your account.

Alternatively you can refer a friend, and you’ll get another £5 straightaway.

Once you’ve started using the system, you’ll have to complete another 19 offers before you can get your money (referring a friend or answering questions about yourself counts as your first “cog”.) After your 20th offer, the money will start coming in.

You can skip offers you don’t fancy, ensuring that you can always work with brands that you’re interested in.

The money that you earn could easily end up in the hundreds. The average member earns just over £200 per month, but £700 a month isn’t unheard of. All for (at the very most) answering a few short questions!

Here are a few specific things you can do…

There are various opportunities available on the site at the moment. Here are just a few of them:

    • Earn money watching Disney+: You’ll get paid £2 for signing up for your free trial of Disney+, letting you watch old classics like Cinderella and newer favourites like Moana whilst earning money
    • Earn money with Pouch: Pouch allows you to add the best voucher codes from across the internet to your shopping baskets, making sure you’re always getting the best deals. You can earn £1 by simply adding it to your browser
    • Earn £1.50 by signing up as a product tester. The Product Testing site is working with 20Cogs, and you can add £1.50 to your account just by signing up (that’s before you even start testing products, of course!)
    • Earn £5 for every survey you complete via Life Points. Sign up via the site as one of your cogs, and this one could end up pretty lucrative

There are all offers that were available on the site at the time of writing, and all will bag you one “cog”.

Mystery shopping

There are also offers available that you don’t need to answer questions for. You’ll find these under the “bonus offers” section. They might include mystery shopping opportunities with top brands like McDonalds, Primark and Asda, where you’ll get to keep everything that you “buy”.

Think that 20Cogs might be a good way to give your income a bit of a boost? We hope we have you convinced. Sign up and start getting these offers today.

A Guide to Making Money with a Business Career

Reading Time: 4 mins

A career in business is one of the pathways that can currently provide you with the most potential for high job satisfaction and large annual salaries. Whether you want to open your own business or climb up the ranks of a pre-established company, here is everything that you need to know about how to start a lucrative and extremely profitable business career.

Should you take a business degree?

Business degrees are extremely profitable, with the pay of a business graduate at Oxford University reaching around £72,000, while those majoring in business at other top universities, such as Bath, can make around £55,000.

If you want to make money in business, the best action that you can take is to apply for a qualification at a business school or university. It has been shown that there is still a significant pay gap between those with a degree and those without, meaning that if you are focused on making money, studying toward a degree is one of the best career pathways for you. Additionally, business majors such as business analysis and applied economics are some of the highest-paying university degrees, ensuring that you will instantly be able to grow your salary when you graduate.

The highest-paying business degrees include:

  • Entrepreneurship
  • Finance and Accounting
  • Business Administration and Management
  • Computer Science

Not only this, but a business degree can be extremely useful when you are trying to kickstart a career in business, as it will allow you to gain greater knowledge about business operations, develop a lucrative business plan and build your managerial skills. This will enable you to apply for higher-salaried positions and beat the competition in order to gain better job positions, as well as enable you to build a winning business in the future.

You should also consider taking a Master’s degree if you want your career to be successful. This will enable you to focus on business specialisms and the subjects that are you interested in, prepare for specific roles that you want to take on and ensure that you are able to improve your leadership skills. As a result of gaining these skills, you will be well positioned to secure higher-ranking positions and get fast-tracked for promotion or for a managerial role, which often come with higher salaries.

It can be difficult to go to business school, especially as you get older. However, if you are looking at a career change or you have recently decided to follow a career in business, you should consider applying for online business masters programs at Suffolk University. Their specialist courses have been designed specifically for entrepreneurs. What’s more, their online nature allows you to make money alongside your degree, and ensures that you can start out on your business career path regardless of your personal situation.

What are the highest salaried business careers?

It is important to be aware that even when you have obtained your degree, this is not a guarantee that you will be able to secure a high-salaried job, and it is important to consider the business careers that will be able to make you the most money. Some of the best jobs for business majors include:

  • Financial advisors, accountants and chief financial officers
  • Business, business operations, HR and marketing managers
  • Management consultants and analysts

Most of these top positions are leadership and managerial roles that you may have to work up to over time. However, you may be able to achieve these roles more quickly by signing on to a fast-track graduate scheme or leadership program, which are designed to cultivate up-and-coming managers within the company.

However, the career with the highest salary of all is that of an entrepreneur. Although your wage will highly depend on the success of your business, most of the richest people in the world are entrepreneurs in their own right, and rely on their company to generate their income.

Should you start your own business?

As has already been discussed, starting your own business is one of the most profitable ventures that you can consider as a business graduate, and this can allow you to make much more money than if you choose to work for another company. This is because starting your own business will allow you to set your own wage and will ensure that you are collecting all of your profits.

Although you should consider having a secondary income when you first open your business in order to ensure that your finances are stable, running your own business is one of the best career options available as it will allow you to work for yourself, develop and run your own business idea and lead a team of employees to success. There are many outgoings and challenges that you should consider before setting up a business, including the fact that you may not have a consistent income and that you may not be able to pay yourself for a few months after your business opens. Additionally, only 56% of businesses make it to their fifth year, with many businesses failing due to issues with cash flow. However, although you will have to put in longer hours in order to achieve your goals, this is a sure-fire way to make your own wealth and build success within your career.

How can you find a profitable job in the industry?

If you are uncertain about starting your own business, this does not mean that you are unable to have a successful business career. Instead, there are many profitable jobs on the market for those looking for good roles, although these are usually incredibly competitive.

To get a good job in business, you should:

  • Get management experience

How to Make Money From a Trucking Business

Reading Time: 2 mins

Very few people realize that the trucking business is actually very profitable. Millions of people around the world need to transport their goods in bulk to different parts of the globe. And with online shopping becoming a popular method of purchasing products, trucking companies are popping up left and right in order to cash in on this opportunity. We’re seeing just how essential truck drivers are as industry and supply management got hit hard due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Because the trucking business can be competitive, many newcomers often end up with less money than they started with. Running a successful trucking business takes more than just knowing how to drive a truck or being familiar with the roads.

Find a niche market and stick to it.

If you are an owner-operator, there’s a good chance that your small business won’t last long if you play with the big boys. While there is definitely some profit to be had in markets that large carriers dabble in, you face tougher competition since they have a better capacity to service these markets.

Try to look for markets that large carriers avoid. You’ll most likely end up dealing with specialized loads, but there’s less competition in niche markets. You could also go to an entirely different industry and set up a food truck business. The important thing is that the market you choose offers work all year round and is less prone to recessions.

Understand your operational costs.

In order for your trucking business to make money, you want to make sure that the costs to run your business do not eclipse the money you are generating from it. Otherwise, you aren’t making profit, but instead bleeding yourself dry.

That’s why you need to know what your fixed costs are. This can range from permits, truck payments, truck insurance, among others. Then you need to look at your variable costs, like fuel for example. Once you have an idea of your fixed and variable costs, you can then price your rates accordingly, to ensure that you profit off of your business. You can check out this spreadsheet to determine your cost-per-mile.

Avoid issues with cash flow.

While they may seem very similar, being in the trucking business is a lot different than being a four-wheel courier. Sure, they do the same thing like delivering things from one location to another. The main difference lies in how they get paid.

While courier jobs get invoiced on a weekly basis, truck owner-operators are often dependent on the payment schedules of shippers and brokers. This means that their cash flow isn’t as consistent.

Trucking companies get around this by using freight bill factoring to get paid on a more regular basis. Unfortunately, using these services often means a lot of hidden costs, so coursing the freight bill factoring through a service like TAFS.com allows you to maintain a steady cash flow without bleeding your resources dry.

The trucking business is a very interesting industry to be a part of, especially if you like to drive around the country and want to make money doing so. By following these tips, you will be running a profitable trucking business in no time.

Advantages Of Taking Your Postgraduate Studies Online

The competitive world of today will challenge you to take your yearning for professional development and personal growth. One of the most recommended ways to do this by going back to school and starting your postgraduate studies.

Doing so shouldn’t take you back to the same situation you had back when you were just earning our bachelor’s degree. Around this time, you must have found full time employment, running a business, raising your own family, or miles away from the university you want to enroll in. Although traditional schooling seems to be the ideal way for most to earn their masters and even their doctorate degrees, your options do not end there anymore.

Online Postgraduate Studies

Online postgraduate studies is also called distance learning. It is called so because you can earn your diploma even if your university is miles and miles away. A lot of prestigious universities around the globe have options that allow people to take their classes online. This is complete with a virtual package, self-learning kits and manuals, modules, learning assessment, and instructions from a professor.

Have you ever thought of earning your post-graduate degree from a university overseas without ever moving to that country? This is completely possible by studying online. You can inquire in some of the universities abroad wherein some of them even offer scholarships to deserving students. Everything, from the classes to your diploma, can be achieved virtually.

Flexible Schedule

Since it is different with a typical classroom session, schedules for each class can vary depending on the student. In most cases, the student has a choice on their learning schedule to accommodate other more important daily activities. As such, you can start your online class after your work shift or duty, and even after you have hit the gym. Even if this is the case, some school work is still bound in deadlines, but these are also made more flexible. These allow people to have individualized learning that makes them proceed at their own pace.

More Choices

You do not have to be stuck in the same school all over again and stay in the same academic tradition that you have always been exposed to. To actually learn more, you have to take in more experiences as much as possible. Taking online classes for your postgraduate studies will help you with that exposure. As mentioned at ECU Online, an Australian University that offers online classes, there are various course choices that can be taken online with differences in duration as well. You can have a full diploma or earn  certificate with the other equivalents.

Avoid Travel Woes

The internet has created a global village which will enable you to leave your comfort zone, virtually and explore more options all around the world. If you want a more diverse learning environment, you can enroll in online classes which allow you to experience being a foreign student without having to spend costly travel expenses.

Before, people mostly opt to go to the nearest university in their area because going to a more preferred school would mean that they would have to move places and travel more hours a day just to attend class. This isn’t ideal anymore since a lot of schools permit students to only log in their website and have their classes online. So imagine if you have no choice and you want to learn abroad. You would probably have to pay as much money to travel as your tuition fees in school. Not to mention, you would be away from home where your family, loved ones, and friends are.

Working While Studying

Even in the past, people have been studying and working at the same time. This has been a common practice no matter how young a person is. Even at a younger age, kids learn to take on summer jobs and college students take one or more side jobs just to pay for school and other expenses. While these are all noble ways, these are totally different from the job that’s providing you with the money you need to live day to day. If you want to continue studying, you should do so, but without having to sacrifice your employment for it.

Schools in the past have actually made this possible by conducting post-graduate classes at night. While these are favorable to people whose work ends at five and who do not have other commitments and family to go home to, this does not apply to people who work night shifts and have a family to go back home to everyday. With online learning, you take your education with you at home while you go out and do your job for your family during the day.

Opens Opportunities

Taking your postgraduate studies will present you with a lot of opportunities later on especially in your career. Become a specialist in your field and vie for that promotion in your company. You can also have opportunities to take a teaching profession since you have complied with the requirement of having a postgraduate education. This will greatly give you an edge so you can stay on top of your career. Furthermore, with lesser cause of disruptions that can prohibit you from completing your studies right away, you can earn your degree faster so you can also earn the rewards sooner. One advantage of going back to school is that you are given an opportunity to know about the latest development across your field and  do your own readings regarding it. With the support you can get from your lecturers online, you can take studying onto the next level.

There is no stop in learning and the modern competitive world is one great advocate for it. In growing into a better professional and learner, you can earn the perks from global postgraduate studies without having to leave the comfort of home and sacrificing your daily routine. Studying has never been this easy, so grab the opportunity and get that masters or doctorate degree you need to make that next step.

5 Ways To Be More Productive At Work (Even While at Home)

Reading Time: 3 mins

Whether you’re working from home or still stuck in the office, productivity has taken a nosedive in the midst of our new “normal.” Rather than tackling that to-do list first thing in the morning, most of us are looking for distractions and entertainment. Anything to take our minds off of work and the current world events. Unfortunately, no-work equals no-pay. Even if you feel like browsing Instagram feeds for the 5th time before 10:00 AM, there are ways to be more productive, even if you’re working in your pajamas. Let’s explore 5 simple ways to boost your productivity and get to work fast.

Plan Your Day Out Ahead of Time

Don’t dive into one task only to find yourself unsure of what to do after. Not knowing what to do next can lead to anxiety, which will inevitably lead to procrastination. Experts recommend always having your day planned out ahead of time. Map out when you want to accomplish each task and set daily goals. You can even reward yourself with little treats throughout the day for reaching certain milestones.

When it comes to planning out your day, go ahead and “swallow the frog.” That means, do all of your hardest tasks first and leave your easier goals for later in the day. Generally speaking, people do better if the hard stuff is out of the way and they have something to look forward to.

Cut Out Distractions

Whether you’re working from home or an office, cut out any distraction you can. Strive to set aside a few hours a day where you simply work without losing focus. Leave off the TV or radio, turn your cell phone to silent, and close out any tabs with social media. Prioritize what you want to accomplish first and decide the importance of each task. Classify each task according to urgency and importance. Decide when you will do each task and get to work. As a reward, tell yourself you can scroll through Facebook for 20 minutes after you’ve got the most important tasks checked off your list.

Multi-Task With Text-To-Speech

Here’s a hack most people aren’t familiar with: using text-to-speech technology to multi-task. Rather than reading boring emails or documents, put them into a text-to-speech application such as Notevibes and listen to the words out loud while you accomplish other tasks. This allows you to stay on top of your workload, without compromising other important documents, letters, or emails that may need your attention also.

Text-to-speech can also be clutch if you’re trying to write a word document but aren’t sure how it sounds. Simply input your work into the application and hear your words as others will. This can be a great editing tool if you feel you’ve hit a mental wall in terms of how and what to write.

Divide and Conquer

Sometimes the very idea of working for 8 hours straight is enough to make you not want to work at all. Instead of looking at the work “day,” block your day off into tiny little work sections. This is especially key if you’re working from home. For example, if you feel most productive in the morning, block out the hours in which you work best and use that time to meet your most important goals. If you’re someone who likes to work for a bit and then clears your head, you might do well with an off/on every hour type of schedule. Of course, if you’re working in an office you may not have that flexibility, but at home, this can be key to staying productive.

Utilize Productivity Tools

Still, feeling rather unproductive? There’s no harm in reaching out to technology for a bit of help. There are plenty of tools and applications available to help you accomplish several tasks. Trello is one example of a productivity tool where you can key in tasks and follow up accordingly. You’ll even get reminders if there is work that needs to be done. At the end of the day, do what it takes to get your work done and then go from there. No one needs to be productive 24/7.

Teach Online Classes to Make Money from Home

Reading Time: 5 mins

Do you have a special skill and are of a patient, kind demeanour? You could make some good money if you decide to take advantage of this skillset and teach online classes.

Find out how below!

The New Normal

Working from home has become a necessity for many people during the coronavirus pandemic. To some it’s an annoyance, hindering their ability to get that much work done without the practical comforts of the office. But for others it’s been an opportunity to see if working from home is something they could get used to.

We imagine lots of people will be going self-employed during or after this crisis. Deciding that working from home suits their lifestyle and wanting to keep doing it full time. Or maybe they’ll just want to set up a second source of income and see how it goes.

The trick is finding a skill you can monetise.

Teach Online Classes

Setting yourself up as an online teacher is a great way to make some extra money. If you become successful you could then decide to make it your full time job. Lots of people do this for a living, so why can’t you?

You may already be a trained and qualified teacher, if you are then that’s great, but it’s not mandatory. All you need to get started is a subject or skill you thoroughly understand and could teach online classes about. It could be nearly anything!

Are you a creative writer or an expert in digital marketing? This is something you could teach others to do. There’s always a huge demand for skilled writers and marketers.

Are you a whizz with maths or science? Most people aren’t so consider helping others by teaching online classes.

Make money teaching English as a foreign language

If you’re great at communicating with skills you could also teach children in other countries how to speak English by using platforms like iTutor group and many others. Again you don’t need any formal qualifications to do this, you just need to be the right sort of person. But having TEFL or a TESOL qualification helps.

These can be completed online and having them means sites like iTutor group will pay you more money per hour.

Or are you passionate about history? Many people love history and have their own specialist areas that they hold an encyclopaedic amount of knowledge on. If that’s you then teach online classes showing off your knowledge.

Practical Skills

You don’t even need to take the academic route if that’s not your style. You could teach online art classes such as drawing or painting. You’d be surprised how many people are keen to learn from an expert such as yourself and would gladly pay you to learn more about developing their own skills.

You could even teach people practical skills like DIY, gardening, cooking and anything else that requires skills and knowledge. Many online teachers are people who’ve done a certain job or hold a certain skill and are now using that skill to make money helping others. From acting classes, life coaching, fitness all the way to fishing, it’s about using the things you’re good at and the things you’ve done in your career to create a successful online teaching class.

Teach your hobbies

Believe it or not, people tend to be good at what they enjoy. Or hold a large amount of knowledge. It may be something that you do for a hobby but have never considered as a career or side project. Are you a keen sports fan? Or a movie buff? Perhaps it’s music or something even more niche.

We recently read about a chap who was a lifelong wrestling fan and ran a successful podcast on the subject. Not only did he become an internet personality (in that niche) over time, but he also managed to teach other people online how to become successful podcasters. Something he mostly taught himself from scratch.

What is it you love? You may have more to offer than you realise.

Creating Online Courses

If teaching online classes directly isn’t your style you can create courses about your subject and sell them online. The same rules as above also apply here. It’s also a fantastic was to earn a passive income from your knowledge while you focus on other things.

Read more about creating online courses in our article here.

What Tools can help me?

There is a range of tools at your disposal for creating online classes, courses and instructional/educational videos.

Skype, Whatsapp Video and Zoom are the best three online video chat services. But Apple’s FaceTime is also a great option, providing both parties have it. These offer a bunch of free services that allow you to chat with students or entire classes at once if need be.

Courses and books can be created and published on Amazon through their self-publishing service. Learn more about that here.

If you’d prefer to create videos instead of teaching direct lessons over video chat, then consider setting up your own website. You can do this on WordPress or from many other places. It can be done for free but once you become successful, do consider spending some money on proper professional website. It’s cheaper than you think!

Here you can offer a paid-for series of videos (rather than live sessions) or a monthly membership to unique content. Set payment to a realistic level though. We want to attract customers not deter them.

Things self-employed people have to consider

Being your own boss is great and despite the hard work and obstacles of getting set up, once you do it’s worth it.

But there are things you now need to consider that you may not have before. For example declaring your own earnings for tax. This can be a difficult to get your head around at first, but in time it becomes fairly easy. And as you get more successful you can eventually hire an accountant to do most of the heavy lifting! Although as a sole-trader, it’s fairly straightforward.

Remember if you have a full time job but start earning good money from your teaching online classes, you’ll still need to declare the earnings and pay tax.

It’s also okay to register as self-employed even if you’re currently receiving furlough pay due to COVID-19. If you want to use this time to set up your own business while in isolation then go for it!

It may be a great way to turn this crisis into something positive.

Mystery shopping: Become a mystery shopper and get paid to shop and eat out

Reading Time: 8 mins

Editor’s Note: This mystery shopping article has been updated on 7th April 2020 to reflect the UK lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. The information on shopping in-store isn’t currently applicable and is for reference only. The sections on online shopping and giving feedback over the phone, internet, etc. are more relevant at present. Check the NHS website for information on staying safe.

Become a mystery shopper and get FREE meals in restaurants, FREE stays in hotels and FREE drinks in bars.

Many mystery shopping companies will provide you with different assignments depending on who their clients are. We show you here how to get mystery shopping jobs and bag lots of freebies as a mystery shopper.

What is mystery shopping?

Mystery Shopper

Nowadays, all industry sectors employ mystery shoppers – retail, automotive, financial services, hospitality, property, call centres, public services, travel, and even the voluntary sector – so there’s a huge range of work available.

If you become a mystery shopper you could be enjoying a weekend break one month and phoning a call centre to complain about your gas bill the next.

You don’t need any formal qualifications to be a mystery shopper – but you do need to have good observational skills and a good memory.

Mystery shopping (sometimes known as secret shopping) has been around for 60 years and is now highly regulated in the UK. The Market Research Society has created a code of conduct, and standards are maintained by trade bodies such as the Mystery Shopping Providers Association.

Good part-time work

how to become a mystery shopper

Mystery shopping is very flexible and not usually suitable as a full-time job, but it can be good to fit around other jobs in your life.

And remember that mystery shoppers count as self-employed, so you’ll need to declare your earnings to HMRC. Find out here about paying tax when you make extra money.

Different types of mystery shopper jobs

Report-only mystery shopper

how to get freebies

This is the most common option. You’ll be given a brief and a checklist of things to look out for. You need to follow your instructions (without letting anybody know you’re testing them), evaluate the response and then provide feedback, usually by way of an online questionnaire.

Telephone mystery shopper

get paid for feedback

If you’re better at playing a role on the phone than in person, you might prefer this option – there’s plenty of work available. You’ll be given a company to call with a set of questions that a typical customer may have. Again, you’ll need to assess the response and provide feedback.

Postal monitoring

what is postal monitoring

This one requires minimum effort. Your home address is simply used for receiving brochures and other promotional material. You return the items, and the content and speed of delivery is measured.

N.B. don’t be conned by ‘mystery shopping’ scams that get you to receive money into your bank account and then send most of it on to a foreign account to ‘test’ the money transfer company.

These are totally bogus and should be avoided and, ideally, reported to Action Fraud. Be careful only to use the mystery shopping agencies we mention on MoneyMagpie so that you’re not scammed.

Note that you should take care when handling items coming through the post during the coronavirus pandemic. Ideally you should use disposable gloves and throw away outer packaging. Clean objects down with a soapy cloth (or, even better, use 70% alcohol spray), or put soft items through the washing machine if possible. Also wash hands thoroughly afterwards. You could leave items aside in a safe place (like a high shelf set aside especially for the purpose) for a while before handling them, too.

Email mystery shopping

email mystery shopping

You’ll be sending specific enquiries to websites and monitoring the speed and content of the response. Depending on your personality, writing emails is potentially much easier than talking to businesses in person or on the phone!

Again, you’ll need to assess and then pass on your findings.

Covert video mystery shopper

how to get freebies

This is specialist stuff and only for well-trained shoppers. Essentially, you’re given a brief; you enter the premises as a customer, and then you record the entire process using covert video cameras. Companies need clear pictures, so don’t go for this if you record your feet at family events!

giving your opinion online

get paid to do surveys

It’s not mystery shopping as such, but giving your opinions about products or services through online survey companies is the same type of thing.

It’s another easy and quick way of making some extra cash in your spare time.

You have to be careful which online survey companies you join though. These are the ones that we like:

Make sure you set up a separate email address before you sign up to any of these. Give this separate email address to them when they ask for contact details so that your usual inbox isn’t flooded with offers and ads (that’s one of the ways they make their money).

Find out more about online surveys and how to make the most money from them here.

How to get involved as a mystery shopper

Step 1: Find the right mystery shopping agency for you.

save money shopping

Check out the list below and sign up with one of the many mystery shopping agencies on offer. It’s not a complete list, the full list of genuine agencies can be found in our mystery shopping eBook (which is absolutely free!)

Some specialise in specific industries, others are more general. You could try investigating the major department stores – Selfridges for example has its own mystery shopping panel.

Be sure to check out…

This list contains some of the better mystery shopping agencies in the UK. We have the complete list in our Mystery Shopping eBook.

Most of the agencies will get you to take a test before they’ll let you in. These can be quite tricky so you might have to do them a few times before getting them right. Don’t be put off though – persist!

If you want to find a company on your own…

  • Make sure they’re based in the UK with a UK phone number and address.
  • Don’t just put ‘mystery shopping’ into your search engine. All sorts of dodgy companies could come up.
  • If you see a company you haven’t heard of before, put their name into the search bar and see what websites like ours say about them. Check the forums too as people who have had experience of them will say what they think.
  • Make sure you keep an eye out for the small ads too. Local papers and recruitment agencies often carry mystery shopping adverts.
  • You should be looking for the ones you’ll get the most out of, whether that’s the pay you receive for the jobs you do, or the freebies you get from the places you inspect.
  • It should never cost you to join a company – they should be paying you for the work you do.

Step 2: Go out in the field.

Mystery shopper in disguise

Once the agency accepts you, you can begin looking for jobs on their website.

You need to go and shop – or eat – or enjoy a show – but the main objective is to follow the guidelines exactly, without having the instructions in front of you.

You’ll need to report on products and services, which can include anything from aspects of the decor, cleanliness, atmosphere, how the staff deal with other customers, how many staff there are and what they’re all doing.

Most mystery shopping agencies ask that you don’t write notes or make what you’re doing obvious while you’re ‘on the job’, as it can affect the way you’re treated by the staff. The company’s main objective is to get an impartial experience.

Note that at time of writing, the UK is on lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic and you should only be doing minimal shopping trips for essential groceries right now. You can however make a note of the in-person mystery shopping opportunities available and apply for them when life returns to normal!

Step 3: Report on your mystery shopping experience.

save money shopping

This will usually involve filling in an online questionnaire with short or longer answers about your experience as a customer.

You’ll receive payment/reimbursement after you’ve reported on your job, which you’ll ideally do within 24 hours of completing the task.

Pay rates differ from company to company and depend on the complexity of the work.

Generally, you can expect to earn £5 – £25 per task plus expenses (but as little as £1 – £5 for phone work).

A Money Magpie’s mystery shopping Experience

Make money mystery shopping

Our Publishing Editor, Marc Crosby, decided to join up to a mystery shopping agency to see just how easy it was to earn money. Here he tells us about the experience:

“I joined up to one of the online mystery shopping agencies and, after putting in a few details, was asked to do a mystery shop for a fast food chain in my local area. It didn’t take long to be offered the job and they were willing to pay £20 for completing it.

It really did feel like going undercover, little did the staff know I was watching their every move, mwahahaha…well, except, they probably did, because mystery shopping takes a little practice. I was told to note down how long it took from asking for my order to the meal being handed to me, which meant using my phone as a stopwatch. That’s easier said than done when you’re juggling your wallet around.

By the time the meal was handed to me and I’d fumbled for the ‘stop’ button, they probably knew what I was up to (which might explain why a member of staff held the door open for me as I left, wishing me a good day – not a normal procedure at fast food stores!) But, hey ho, good service and I gave a good score. All I needed to do was go back and quickly answer a few questions that took no longer than half an hour to complete.

I was paid within two weeks and was offered loads of mystery shopping work after. Honestly, it could have been a nice little earner if I had more time to do it.

So if you’re in doubt, I’d say give it a go. Mystery shopping really is quite easy money, plus the company usually pays for your food/item, so that’s another bonus!”
